How we can help

Low mood or feeling down? Worrying often? Feeling sad or tearful? Feeling helpless or hopeless?

NHS Talking Therapies can help.

Online self-referral

To self-refer online please use one of our self-referral forms. Use the relevant form for the area of the GP practice that you are registered with.

Our services in Doncaster, Rotherham and North Lincs provide a range of talking therapies. These include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) and interpersonal therapy (IPT). The Rotherham and Doncaster services also offer counselling for depression, couples therapy for depression and general counselling. You will work with our therapists to find which treatment is best for you.

Service information

More information about the specific services that each Talking Therapies team offer can be found on the individual service pages.

We want to make our service as accessible as possible. Sessions can be one to one with a therapist or in a group. You can also decide if you would prefer your sessions face to face, over the phone, via instant messaging or video call.

We understand that group or one to one sessions may not be for everyone, so we have a range of online support too, including our online self-help guides which are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You can find out more about our different types of therapy below.

Getting support – a step by step guide

  1. Refer into the service: You can self-refer to your local Talking Therapies service by telephone or via one of our online self-referral forms. You can find all of our details on the contact us page. You can also be referred by your GP, or by another healthcare professional. We ask that you are over 18 years old and are registered with a local GP in the area you wish to receive treatment (Doncaster, Rotherham or North Lincs) to be able to use our service.
  2. Book an assessment: Once we have received your referral, we will contact you to arrange an initial appointment with a member of the Talking Therapies team.
  3. Initial assessment appointment: This appointment will be with one of our Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners to discuss your mental health and how we can best support you going forward. If we feel that we are not the right service to best support you, we can signpost you to other organisations.
  4. Treatment begins: We will start with your treatment, which will be the treatment most appropriate for you and your needs. The treatment we offer ranges guided self-help to high intensity cognitive behavioural therapy.

Types of therapy

Individual therapy

NHS Talking Therapies offer a number of different treatments on a one-to-one basis to support individuals suffering from anxiety or depression. Treatment can take place face-to-face, over the phone, via our typed text messaging platform or via video call. Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners in all three services (Doncaster, Rotherham and North Lincs) provide guided self-help techniques, which are based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) principles, focusing on thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

All three services also offer high-intensity CBT and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR). These are delivered by our CBT Therapists.

Counselling for depression is delivered by NHS Doncaster Talking Therapies and NHS Rotherham Talking Therapies. This treatment addresses symptoms of depression by focusing on the feelings that you have, allowing you to explore and make more sense of them. You will also be able to better understand the impact that those feelings are having on your life.

Couples therapy for depression is also offered by our Doncaster and Rotherham services. It supports individuals suffering from depression and uses the relationship as a resource to help support the individual and their partner.

For more information on these treatments, click on your local area’s webpage.

Group therapy

All three services provide a range of courses aimed at teaching you how your mental health can be affected and a range of techniques to help you improve your symptoms.
